The Juneau School District is committed to providing support for teachers new to the district to ensure all teachers have the skills, knowledge, and attitudes essential to meet and/or exceed the Alaska State Teaching Standards and the Juneau School District Performance Standards.

The New Teacher Portfolio is a professional growth systems designed to guide teachers new to the Juneau School District with information, curriculum, and procedures necessary to develop rigorous and relevant teaching and develop essential relationships that support the work of the Juneau School District.

Teachers new to the Juneau School District will partner with the Instructional Support Team in their building, establishing a mentor relationship. The mentor will support the new teacher by providing essential resources to support high-quality instruction designed to maximize the learning opportunities of all students.

This three-year, tiered model is designed to assist new teachers with the support necessary for the growth of skills, knowledge, and attitudes to contribute to an atmosphere of excellence in learning. The new teacher will be able to demonstrate performance at or beyond the required standards of the Juneau School District and the State of Alaska, thus ensuring their tenure status.
